“I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” Psalm 130:6 NIV
Can you imagine for 4, 8, 12 hours being assigned to stand watch at a post? Can you imagine how difficult such a task it would be for someone to keep watch through the night? If you have been in any of the armed forces, then you know the feeling, but if not then think about it.
I am someone who struggles driving at night, for fear of falling a sleep at the wheel, so I KNOW I would have a tremendously hard time being a night watchmen. This psalm compares the author’s longing for Jesus to the longing that a sentry would have for the morning or the end of their watch.
I know that this longing is something that the Lord is re-awakening in me. I had for a time been so busy doing the work of God in the world that I was slowly destroying the work of God in me. He is calling me back to deep connection and as I come it is growing my hunger for Him more and more.
Today, if you find yourself not connecting with this verse or recognizing that this is even the slightest bit untrue, pray that God would strengthen that desire. Then you must seek Him anyway and as you return he will cause that flame to burn brighter and brighter.
I think of it like when you are not really hungry but then you smell what someone is cooking or get a small taste of the meal, your appetite grows. Well, come get a whiff; taste and see that the Lord is good. He will keep you coming back for more.
