“My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” James 5:19-20 ESV
This morning I was thinking about the need for accountability. I know that there are many trials that we all must go through in our testing, but some tests that don’t have to befall us. We discussed in my men’s group last night, how in the Lord’s prayer we are shown an example of praying not to be led into temptation, but delivered from evil. Having accountability is a great way that God helps us do that. There are many types of accountability, either submission to church authority, accountability partners, etc. In any case, having someone to whom you trust and are willing to allow speak to you in regards to your sins, short comings and misguided choices is crucial when trying to avoid unneeded tests and trials.
I few moments ago I read an apology letter from Pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle’s Mars Hill Church that further reiterated this need. He has been confronted quite a bit in the past years and has found himself in quite a bit of controversy. I believe his letter speaks to this need as he mentions thanks to those that hold him accountable, but I think greater accountability along the way might have helped brother Mark avoid some of these tests. I don’t presume to know the specifics of the situation, and won’t dare pass judgment. I do know that God has used this to spur this conversation we are having now.
Until then, I wonder if you all would be willing to share:
1. Your response to the apology letter.
2. Your thoughts on any accountability you’ve experienced.
3. Your thoughts on the importance of accountability.
