Hearing God’s Complete Message

Today, we’re discussing the importance of hearing completely from God. We often limit where we look for His voice, so I want to open your mind to recognize that God operates outside our expectations of how, where, and through whom He can speak.

Elijah’s Encounter with God

Let’s look at one of my favorite Bible passages about the prophet Elijah. This man was a beast, but he was also human like us. He went from working mightily against the prophets of Baal to recovering from a season of feeling lost. In 1 Kings 19, we see Elijah looking specifically for God’s voice.

Now, let’s dive into 1 Kings 19:11-13 (ESV):

“And he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?'”

Key Takeaways

1. God’s Voice Isn’t Always in the Spectacular

Elijah expected to find God in dramatic events, but His voice came in a gentle whisper. Those who truly want to hear from God listen for that quiet, still, small voice. Take time to get before God and seek Him in that stillness.

2. God Can Speak Through Unexpected Sources

We often ignore places and spaces where God is trying to get our attention. Be open to the possibility that God wants to speak to you in any space, through anyone. Remember, in Numbers, God even spoke through a donkey!

Cultivating a Listening Heart

Cultivate a listening heart and a mindset that’s constantly looking to learn from God in every context. God is always looking to speak and teach. The question is, will we hear it like Elijah did?
